Marilyn Warsofsky

Marilyn Warsofsky as Sharlot Hall

An accomplished poet and writer, was passionate about Arizona’s unique history. In 1909, she became the first woman to hold public office in Arizona when she was appointed territorial historian. She later served as a lobbyist and as a presidential elector.

Hall started writing poetry after her family moved to Lonesome Valley in 1882. Her poem, “Arizona,” was placed on the desk of every member of the U.S. Congress. This may have contributed to Arizona entering the Union as a separate state, and not as part of New Mexico.

Hall’s most important legacy is the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott. In 1927, she moved her extensive collection of artifacts into the Old Governor’s Mansion, which she turned into a public museum. She worked to preserve the building, and Arizona’s history, until her death in 1943.

Sharlot Hall was the first person elected to the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame.
