Ted Newman
Ted Newman, born in Custer, South Dakota. In 1954, he moved to Holbrook, Arizona, where he developed an appreciation of Arizona’s open spaces. Newman made his first public appearance, with his guitar, singing “Empty Saddles in the Old Corral” for an old cowboy’s funeral. He also appeared, with his sister, in a barbershop quartet that sang at the opening of Channel Three TV in Phoenix in 1955.
During the eleven years he taught in the Tempe Elementary School District, Newman wrote songs that teach people about the desert and Arizona, and released several CDs. He received the TD#3 Impact Award, the Tempe Diablos Excellence in Education Award, and the Red Ribbon Award.
Newman has written and performed songs for Polly Rosenbaum and Barry Goldwater. He was named an Arizona CultureKeeper TM in 2008, in recognition of his original music and his educational programs.
