Dee Adams

Dee Adams as Mrs. Capt. Benjamin Nolen

First arrived in the Arizona territory in 1880 with her husband, Captain Benjamin Nolen, and returned in 1883 when he was again assigned to the area. In total, the Nolan’s spent just over a year in the territory. During that time they were stationed at Ft. Apache, Ft. Verde, and Ft. Whipple.

Although unprepared for the rigors of military life, Nolan chose to follow her officer husband. Living conditions at these forts were less than ideal and the threat of sickness, Indian attacks, and extreme weather were always present. She lived as the soldiers did, rising with reveille and retiring with tattoo.

Her main responsibilities were to keep a proper home and serve as hostess to officers and their wives. Since Nolan had hired help for housework, she had little to do. During the days she sewed, read poetry, and picnicked with the other wives.  She battled daily against boredom and loneliness.

Through it all, she became a stronger, more self-reliant woman.  Experiencing more than her eastern counterparts could ever imagine.
