Moved to the Chandler area in 1913 with her first husband and four of her six children. They made their living growing cotton in the Salt River Valley. As a farm wife, she helped care for the cotton and performed household tasks like cooking and making soap.
Wilson witnessed how World War I influenced the growth of the valley and how the Depression reversed that growth. Listening to the radio with other farmers, Wilson also experienced the Cotton Crash of 1920, when restrictions on Egyptian cotton were lifted and the price of cotton plummeted.
She saw the City of Chandler grow from a desert flatland into the "City Beautiful" that AJ Chandler envisioned. She tells her story of tragedy and triumph with humor and grace. |
