The Jack Mellon Mercantile also houses one of the finest collections of books on Yuma history.
Our gift shop bears the name of the riverboat captain, Jack Mellon, who was the original owner of the historic house. Jack Mellon, who built the then adobe house in 1873, was the captain of the Gila Steamboat that traveled up and down the Colorado River delivering supplies to military outposts and mining camps in the 1800s. Later, the house was purchased by E. F. Sanguinetti, whose home was next door.
Today, both the Jack Mellon Mercantile and the Sanguinetti House Museum are historical landmarks in downtown Yuma. Proceeds from the Jack Mellon Mercantile go toward funding efforts by the Yuma County Historical Society to improve the Sanguinetti House Museum and surrounding gardens.
